E&IS employees volunteer for Boy Scouts Merit Badge College in Nashua, NH
08 Mar 08
In the current age of technology, increased opportunities for careers in math and science are on the rise. Across the nation, there is a push to match the rise in opportunities with a renewed interest in math and science by school age children. The Boy Scouts of America in collaboration with twenty BAE Systems volunteers managed to do just that, this past weekend in Nashua.
On March 8th the Boy Scouts held the first regional Math and Science Merit Badge College and Career expo. BAE Systems’ employees with optical, mechanical and system engineering as well as finance and business backgrounds volunteered their time and talent to mentor with over 170 Scouts as they worked to earn math and science related merit badges.
This effort was part of the new E&IS Communities 1st initiative which focuses on increasing employee volunteerism by identifying volunteer opportunities in the local community. The BAE volunteers proactively engaged in the Boy Scouts merit badge process through training, lesson planning, teaching and mentoring.
In addition to the merit badge instruction, BAE volunteers participated in the onsite career expo. “During the career expo Scouts were able to interact with BAE employees, see our products and understand how math and science plays a key role in our business” said Frank Heitkamp, Optical Engineering Manager and volunteer. “This allows the Scouts to better integrate their merit badge studies with real world experience.”
Heitkamp went on to say, “It was fantastic to see BAE employee volunteers step up to engage with this project. Their desire to help and to share their knowledge was the key to the events overwhelming success.”
The Boys Scouts Merit Badge College was the inaugural event of Communities 1st in New Hampshire.
