Volunteers provided a Marmaduke-size spring cleaning job at the Humane Society for Greater Nashua (HSFN) on May 14.
As part of their Hairy Day of Caring, twenty-two employees of Electronics & Integrated Solutions (E&IS), an operating group of BAE Systems, spent the afternoon working at the shelter.
Over five miles of walking trails needed maintenance to be used for exercising the shelters’ many dogs awaiting adoption. Several volunteers filled up wheel barrows with sticks, leaves, and other debris that had accumulated on the trails during the winter, and raked and straightened the areas around the trails.
Others tackled indoor chores, including sweeping, laundry, paperwork, filing to track adoptions, and even giving the shelters’ numerous cats some much needed love and attention.
In addition, the BAE Systems employees donated a wooden bench seat for the Humane Society’s courtyard. HSFN rescues many animals, including some of those still orphaned as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
“Its very gratifying to provide aid to animals that can not help themselves and are found in situations beyond their control,” said Lisa Bruckert, E&IS Community Relations representative. “So often organizations such as the Humane Society, which need the most assistance, go unnoticed.”
The Hairy Day of Caring was the third Communities 1st event in New Hampshire since the inception of the program in February 2008. Communities 1st is an E&IS volunteer initiative providing opportunities in the local communities for employees to donate their time to aid local nonprofits.
