Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) represent the latest generation of pilotless aircraft, used for both attack, reconnaissance and civil patrol missions.
In military parlance the term is restricted to reusable heavier-than-aircraft. UAVs are expected to replace manned attack aircraft with the UK's 2005 Defence Industrial Strategy stating that, as an essential part of future combat air capability, the UK is examining the balance between manned and uninhabited aerial vehicles. Future procurements of UAVs are envisaged. With programmes such as Taranis, Kestrel, CORAX, Raven and HERTI, BAE Systems has developed both the technologies and agile project management techniques to be a leading player in this important area.
