Support on Product Environmental Compliance
Failure Analysis and Problem Resolution
Requirement
New product environmental regulations came into force in 2006. A major UK supplier of household electrical items needed advice on the forthcoming as well as current legislation. They required assistance with interpreting them and their relevance to various products they were selling.
Solution
Product Assurance Group were able to give practical support, using their extensively equipped laboratories, in identifying materials used in these products that could potentially infringe environmental regulations. These would require substitution in advance of the new legislation. Materials such as lead, cadmium, chromium VI and brominated fire retardants were found in some of the disassembled items, notably in solder, plastics and fastener surface finishes. These materials will not be allowed under the new legislation.
Benefits
Product Assurance Group were able to identify viable and cost-effective replacement materials, thus enabling the customer to launch a compliant product on the EC market.
