Site Characterisation - Building Surveys

09 Nov 2006

BAE Systems Environmental

Our experience has shown that a thorough historical and visual assessment of structures can pay dividends when planning the future of a site. This is particularly relevant for defence related sites when contamination issues are often of a more sensitive nature.

BAE Systems Environmental can offer a building surveying and assessment service which will compliment most site characterisation activities such as a desk study. The aim of the activity is to characterise each structure in terms of suspected or actual contamination, typically by visual assessment and by the use of monitoring equipment.

For the avoidance of doubt, contaminants may include:-

  • Conventional contaminants
  • Asbestos
  • Radiation
  • Explosives and munitions

In some instances, a historical review of building usage may be undertaken depending on the availability of information. Over the years we have collected a wealth of information in our in-house archives which may support our findings.

We are able to present survey information in both hardcopy and electronic format using our custom built building survey database.

As an added benefit on defence related sites, we are able to analyse building material and swab samples for explosives. This will not normally be adequate to classify a structure ‘free from explosives’, however it may be used to confirm the identity of contamination discovered during the visual assessment e.g. suspect staining.

For sites due for redevelopment, we are able to offer additional advice on the decontamination, decommissioning and demolition requirements for particular buildings based on the information gathered in the building survey.
