A survey of the Barrow community during 2005 identified specific concerns about Youth within the town. Those concerns are embodied in the concept of - The Challenge Generation.
Young people within Barrow face more challenges than ever before in terms of how they will forge their futures:
- the way they will earn their living
- the society they will create
- the environment they will grow up in
But anyone who meets and deals with young people knows that they are willing to take up the challenge, willing to embrace new ideas, and ready to look beyond the past and grab the future.
The town and its business partners also face a formidable challenge - to enable young people to succeed in whatever ways they want, and to be able to do it here in Barrow.
Barrow: The Challenge Generation requires BAE Systems to focus on the current generation of young people in education and challenges us to get the best out of them:
- Celebrate and encourage excellence and achievement among young people within the town.
- Provide career and educational opportunities for young people to stem the migration of the best away from the area.
- Challenge the embedded image of Barrow as a town with a glorious past but an uncertain future. We need to support initiatives that encourage more people and companies to move into the UK ’s most beautiful area with the bonus of friendly people, affordable housing, a skilled and flexible workforce. That will in turn revitalise the area and encourage more young people to stay or return.
- Promote the beautiful Lake District location of Barrow by connecting it with the rest of the region, supporting events to attract more visitors to the overlooked area ‘between the mountains and the sea’
The framework for fulfilling BAE Systems Corporate Responsibility commitments will mirror the challenges facing the youth of Barrow:
- Economic
- Social
- Environment and Health & Safety
Each of these framework headings will enable BAE Systems to focus on what the town needs most for The Challenge Generation, to help them forge a brighter future, giving everyone within BAE Systems the chance to make a difference where it matters most.
