Combat Identification (IFF)

In peacetime or during conflict, it is critical to distinguish friendly forces from unknown or hostile ones.

Our Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems enable friendly forces to recognise friendly platforms among potential targets. This provides critical time to counter an attack or prevent fratricide between friendly forces. IFF systems employ U.S. and NATO-adopted Mark XIIA, Mode 5 secure message formats to positively identify coalition forces and determine targets, both in the immediate battlespace and well beyond a pilot’s visual range.

Our net-centric combat identification capability provides timely information to de-conflict combat forces. The system positively identifies battlespace objectives ranging from dismounted soldiers to air, ground, and sea platforms. It ties the current, disparate combat ID systems together in a family-of-systems that supports the introduction of new systems and capabilities.

BAE Systems’ technology can provide Joint Blue Force situational awareness as an integrated component of net-centric combat identification. It enables the war fighter to make successful engagement decisions and supports informed combat actions in the joint battlespace.
