AUSTIN, Texas — BAE Systems celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Austin-based business July 14, 2005. The ceremony, lunch and exhibits were attended by Texas Senator Jeff Wentworth; Texas Representative Mark Strama; Ms. Patsy Woods Martin, Vice President, Resource Development – Capital Area United Way; Mr. Jeffery Richard, President and CEO of the Austin Area Urban League.
"It's a proud day for BAE Systems and for Austin, Texas. As one of Austin's own celebrates its Golden Anniversary – a momentous occasion capping 50 years of service to our country," said Tom Arseneault, BAE Systems president of Sensor Solutions. "Generations of people have dedicated much, if not all their careers to this company, and its noble mission in support of our nation's defense."
The Austin-based business was established in July 1955 by four University of Texas professors. In 1962, the company became Tracor Inc., and during this period was often referred to as Austin's original high tech company and the city's first home-grown business to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It achieved Fortune 500 status in 1984. Tracor became BAE Systems in November 1999 when Marconi Electronic Systems merged with British Aerospace.
BAE Systems' Austin operations provide innovative and best-value solutions to help war fighters and first responders safely and effectively perform their jobs. Key technologies are focused in the areas of mission avionics and customer support, tactical decision systems, and homeland security systems. The Austin facility employs more than 650 people. Other major sites include Mojave, Calif., and Jerusalem.
