Preston man is named BAE Systems young engineer of the year

05 Jan 2006

Twenty-nine year old Ian Muldowney from BAE Systems has become the latest winner of the prestigious Bee Beamont Memorial Shield. The award recognises the outstanding young engineer of the year within the air programmes businesses of BAE Systems.

Ian, who is based at the Warton site, won the award for his work as Operations Manager Low Observables leading a multi-disciplinary team in delivering technology and demonstration programmes to BAE Systems customers.

On receiving the award he said: I feel very proud and surprised. It was a great achievement to be nominated and winning this award is one of the highlights of my career to date.

He continued: I am looking forward to the forthcoming year as Young Engineer and to the opportunities it will offer to promote engineering both within BAE Systems and to outside organisations. The award will spur me on to keep progressing, improving my own performance as well as that of my team.

Ian joined BAE Systems 10 years ago, coming into the company on a Modern Apprentice. Scheme. He feels his apprenticeship has prepared him well for his current role: It gave me the basic skills I still use today such as team-working, drive and commitment, communication and customer focus.

When hes not a work, Ian, who lives in Ashton, Preston, plays hockey for Springfields HC and enjoys spending time with his young family.

The Young Engineer of the Year Award is also known as the Bee Beamont Shield, named in memory of the test pilot and former British Aerospace Director of Flight Operations. The shield was presented to Ian by a former colleague of Bees, James Earnshaw, who said: "I was honoured to present this award. I thought that an award to a young engineer involved in the development and production of world-beating aircraft was a fitting way to remember Bee, who was an "engineers" test pilot.
