2005 record year for Charity Challenge at BAE Systems in Brough

05 Jan 2006

Over 60,000 has been raised in a busy fundraising year for the BAE Systems Charity Challenge Team at Brough.

Events organised by the sites Charity Challenge Team and employees included Golf Days, a Sportspersons Dinner, a sponsored head shave, a bowling night organised by the Apprentices, a 3-peaks walk, a sponsored diet and various raffles and sales. The charities benefiting from these activities include Children in Need, CLIC, Comic Relief, the Tsunami Appeal, RNLI and Cancer Research.

However the main focus for the sites fundraising activities in 2005 was the Simon Smith Appeal. Simon, a well respected employee at the site and keen rugby player, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in January 2005.

In support of Simon, employees pulled together to take on the challenge of raising money to send Simon and his family on a once in a lifetime trip to Australia. Through various fundraising activities, the challenge was achieved and Simon and his family flew out to Australia last summer.

Simons mother, Kath commented We had a fantastic time in Sydney, Cairns and Brisbane and the Barrier Reef trip was an incredible experience. Australia is a wonderful country to visit, and it is something we wouldn't have been able experience without the support of the BAE Systems Charity Challenge effort and the generous contributions of all of Simons colleagues and friends at the Brough site.
BAE Systems at Brough also hosted a Well Being Day at the site in June for MND sufferers and their friends and relatives. Organised by the MND Association, approximately 40 people attended the event.
