BAE Systems Awarded Royal Navy Sonar Training Contract

23 Apr 2007 | Ref. 116/2007

Plymouth, United Kingdom. - Royal Navy training is to be enhanced by a new training system for sonar operators and maintainers to be supplied by BAE Systems.

Under the circa £3m contract awarded by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte) will provide a high-fidelity emulation of Sonar 2076 as well as a Computer Based Training (CBT) system for initial operator training and maintainer training at the Royal Navy Submarine School in HMS Raleigh, Plymouth.

Sonar 2076 is the world's most advanced, fully integrated, passive/active search and attack sonar suite and, as well as being installed on the Astute Class, it has already been integrated into the Swiftsure and Trafalgar Class update programme BAE Systems is currently managing as part of the Astute prime contract.

The high fidelity sonar emulation will be installed in the current Dolphin Attack Teacher (DAT) simulator where it will be able to provide sonar sub team training, as well as provide the capability to supply command team level training.  The sonar emulation will reuse the core sonar models developed for the current Royal Navy command team trainers.

Paul Laity, Insyte’s naval programmes director, said: “This and other Royal Navy programmes demonstrate a real spirit of partnership between industry and the UK customer in line with the Defence Industrial Strategy.”

Mike Holstead, Maritime Training Systems IPT Team Leader said: “This is a very positive step towards meeting the Sonar 2076 steady state training requirements for existing Ship Submersible Nuclears (SSNs) and the Astute class.”
