SAN FRANCISCO – BAE Systems has been awarded a contract from Matson Navigation Company, Inc., for the drydock, survey, maintenance and repair of the Container Deck Cargo Barge MAUNA LOA, the sister barge to the HALEAKALA, which the company is currently servicing. The estimated total value of the 42-day work package, which will begin in July, is in excess of $2 million, if all options are exercised.
Items in the contract include topside and underwater body preservation, hull and mechanical repairs and preparation work for regulatory body inspections. The specific start date for work on the MAUNA LOA is contingent upon the re-delivery of the HALEAKALA, which is scheduled for completion in May. All work will be performed at BAE Systems’ Ship Repair facility in San Francisco.
"We’re happy to be chosen, once again, to service Matson’s vessels," said Al Krekich, president, BAE Systems Ship Repair. "Through consistent, trusted ship maintenance performance, we are able to contribute to key intermodal commerce services for the benefit of our customer and the consumers that rely on the goods these vessels carry.”
The MAUNA LOA, like the HALEAKALA, is a cargo container handling barge that serves the inter-island Hawaiian trade routes for Matson Navigation Company, which has been serving the Pacific since 1882 and is recognized as an industry leader in ocean transportation, intermodal and logistics services.
