JOHNSON CITY, New York — BAE Systems generated an economic impact exceeding $160 million in the Binghamton, New York area during 2006. The financial effect includes approximately $120 million disbursed in payroll to more than 1,450 employees who live in the area, and almost $40 million in goods and services purchased from local suppliers.
In addition, the company and its employees contributed $460,000 to area civic, charitable, and educational institutions in 2007.
“This community is not just where our business is based; it’s home to more than 1,450 employees who work here,” said Jim Garceau, site executive for the company’s Johnson City facility. “Our community outreach efforts combined with local payroll and spending to make a significant contribution to the Southern Tier economy — make our area an even better place to live and work.”
Employee contributions to local charities included donations of $32,000 to support the Central New York chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association through the company’s Charity Challenge program. Charity Challenge is a company-wide fundraising effort that names a new beneficiary every 18 months.
Of the more than $260,000 in employee contributions last year, $118,000 went to the United Way of Broome County. That figure combined with a $73,000 company gift for a total United Way contribution of $191,000. Among large corporations, BAE Systems was the largest per-capita contributor to the local United Way for the 10th consecutive year.
