Bike Donation in Wayne
Air Force Maj. Mary McKiernan helps her daughter, Olivia, test her new wheels. BAE Systems employees in Wayne assembled and delivered 112 bicycles this year for children of military members deployed overseas.
WAYNE, New Jersey — BAE Systems has donated 112 bicycles and helmets to children of military families stationed at Fort Dix, McGuire Air Force Base, and Lakehurst Naval Center. The company held a bike drive in honor of National Military Appreciation Month, an annual event designated by Congress to recognize and honor members of the military and their families.
“What BAE Systems has done for the morale of our military families is priceless,” said Jackie Holliday, marketing manager for the Fort Dix Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation.
Pete Howard, BAE Systems site executive in Wayne, New Jersey, presented the bicycles to Col. Ronald Thaxton, Fort Dix installation commander, and the families of deployed soldiers on May 18. “BAE Systems is proud of the men and women at Fort Dix and their families,” Howard said. “Our employees are honored to recognize the sacrifices they have made in the name of protecting our country. This is just a small token of our gratitude for their sacrifice and service.”
It was the company’s third annual bike drive in Wayne. More than 30 BAE Systems employees helped assemble and deliver the bikes and helmets. BAE Systems hosts similar annual bike drives at its facilities in San Diego; Reston, Virginia; and St. Louis. The company has donated more than 5,000 bicycles through charitable agencies and support organizations to military families since 1995.
