Video
To make sure that you get the maximum value and impact out of this powerful medium, it is important to consider a range of key issues to not only help you to determine what it is you are trying to produce, but also to prepare a brief for whoever is going to make it.
Key issues
Purpose: Is it designed to explain a project or process, to show trials results, or to demonstrate capability.
Audience: Customers or internal, the general public or government? Consider them when defining style and content.
Key messages: What is the programme designed to convey - detail about a project or process? Is it a training video or explaining a core capability or a single product.
Usage
Size and scope: How will it be used and where and on what it be shown will define content and quality.
Local or global: Is the use local or universal? Could the footage be useful more generally? If you want it to be of global use, then consider the requirements of the different countries.
Internet and intranet: Video could find a wider audience via internet and intranet. To make maximum use of this communication channel, a web version should be considered as part of the brief.
Copyright: You must specify that all rights belong to BAE Systems, as well as exclusive use of any footage filmed specifically for it.
Other footage: Using other footage (news footage, for example) may limit the use of the programme. Other manufacturers and customers may provide footage but you must be clear about its usage. The agreement with any other contributors needs to be for indefinite, global use, in any medium.
Security clearance: Programmes containing classified or restricted material can only be made by production companies with the necessary clearance. This involves them maintaining the security of the raw footage and finished programmes.
Style
It is vital that all video follows certain rules governing layout, the use of text, and the use of the Logo. Use the section of the Brand Standards available here to define your approach to all aspects of presentation.
BAE Systems Logo
In addition to the normal rules on Logo use, the following apply:
1 If a programme has a title the Logo should appear small in the top right corner.
2 Programmes should end with a large Logo on a black background. It may fade up, or they may animate on with a simple wipe. Under no circumstances must the Logo be distorted or rotated using DVE.
3 Do not use a Logo and Tagline throughout the programme - use only the Logo in this case.
A Logo and Tagline can be used at the end of the programme if required.
Video brief and contract
An example video brief and the BAE Systems video contract can be downloaded from this page and used for guidance if required.
