The BAE Systems Bofors 40-mm Mk 3 Naval Gun system from BAE Systems is a highly effective shipboard air-defense weapon system with the versatility to combat surface- and shore-based threats.
Optimized for air-defense mission effectiveness, the 40-mm Mk 3 Naval Gun combines the high-muzzle velocity, rate of fire and controlled dispersion of the L/70 gun with highly lethal prefragmented ammunition. Against surface and on-shore targets, the 40-mm Mk 3 Naval Gun delivers accurate, high-volume fire with armor-piercing, post-impact delay and time-function fuzed ammunition.
The 40-mm Mk 3 Naval Gun fires automatic salvos at 330 rounds per minute from a dual compartment 101-round magazine. The magazine rapidly switches to provide options between the latest Bofors 6 mode programmable 3P rounds and other 40-mm L/70 ammunition types. Bofors 40-mm 3P ammunition provides range of up to 10 kilometers and fuze options allowing three proximity modes as well as settings for time, impact and armor-piercing requirements.
The system can be integrated with any analog or digital fire control system, and is normally unmanned and controlled from the combat information center. As a backup, the 40-mm Mk 3 Naval Gun can be locally controlled from an on-mount operator's console for aiming and will remain fully stabilized by the gun's local gyros. In case of total power supply failure, the gun can be layed and fired manually.
The 40-mm Mk 3 Naval Gun affords unparalleled availability with built-in test functions and ready access to all system components. An integrated logistics support program based on MIL-STD-1388 ensures the 40-mm Mk 3 Naval Gun is optimized for availability, reliability, performance and low life-cycle cost.
