Airborne interrogator identification friend or foe system

E-2C Hawkeye airborne interrogator IFF system

E-2C Hawkeye airborne interrogator IFF system

The E-2C Hawkeye identification friend or foe (IFF) interrogator detector-processor is the world standard for long-range, airborne surveillance electronic countermeasures processor system.

The system operates in conjunction with the primary AN/APS-145 radar and secondary radar antenna co-located in the E-2C rotodome, and is suitable for all AEW, ASW, and SAR applications. It can be integrated with a variety of radar systems on any aircraft.

The Mark XII function incorporates both continuous and sector operation. The interrogator capability provides three-mode selective identification feature (SIF) interlace, with a fourth mode on alternate scans of the antenna. Mode 4 is incorporated using super mode (SIF and Mode 4 on the same interpulse period) in designated azimuthal sectors.

The IFF target report includes range, azimuth, source input format code, and Mode 4 friend identification. The report also includes flags for interrogation multipath, reply multipath, I/P, emergency, and potential azimuth position errors from garble conditions; the reply function will exclude designated x-y map grid zones from reply detection. Reports can also display video outputs to the operator.

The system uses dedicated serial data interface with the aircraft central computer. Input serial messages provide commands and data, and output serial messages provide target reports, status reports, and in-flight performance monitoring reports.

The system incorporates both continuous and sector operation. The interrogator capability of the system provides three-mode selective identification feature interlace, with a fourth mode that alternates scans of the antenna. Mode 4 is incorporated using “super mode” in designated azimuthal sectors.

The improved IFF system provides video outputs to the operator displays, control indicator station.

Extensive growth capability exists to accommodate interrogator side lobe suppression, Mode S interrogation and the future Mode 5 waveform.
