Firefighting
Original equipment manufacturers of fire equipment have used uncooled infrared camera cores, manufactured by BAE Systems, in infrared cameras to meet the demanding environmental requirements of the fire service. Because infrared cameras allow firefighters to see through smoke, the cameras have been labeled as valuable life saving tools, and have been incorporated into standard operating procedures.
The key applications within the fire service include:
- Search and rescue
- Size-up — determine the relative location of the fire and extension based on the thermal profile
- Attack — allows firefighters to quickly locate the seat of the fire
- Overhaul — find remaining hot spots and extinguish to prevent re-kindle
