Medium Heavy Vehicles - FMTV A1 Variant

The FMTV A1R incorporates a new powerful diesel engine that meets the more stringent 2004 United States Environment Protection Agency emissions standards, yet delivers 275 HP (817 ft-lbs torque) in the 4 X 4 configuration and 330 HP (851 ft-lbs torque) in the 6 X 6 configuration for full time capability under all conditions.

The A1R brings state-of-the-art commercial truck technology to military tactical vehicles with an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) on both the trucks and the companion trailers, an exhaust retarder, a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) for changing terrains, and an ultra high speed J1939 electronic Databus. This Databus makes the new Interactive Electronic Technical Manual, or IETM, possible. This Class 5 IETM - the most advanced on the market - with intrusive diagnostics plugs into the central nervous system of the vehicle and interactively works with the vehicle's four separate electronic control units. Utilizing the highest resolution available, the IETM identifies vehicle problems, and solutions, calls out necessary tools and hardware and provides detailed repair instructions - increasing efficiency and accuracy of maintenance tasks.

Other improvements on the FMTV A1R vehicles include increased protection against corrosion. Double-sided galvanized all steel cabs, stainless steel exhaust systems, chip resistant coatings and many other upgrades provide for even longer life in harsh environments. The FMTV is the first tactical vehicle ever to exceed the 22-year mark in Accelerated Corrosion Tests at the Army's Aberdeen Test Center.

The truck is designed for the soldier with comfort, safety and ease of operation in mind. It includes a fully automatic seven-speed transmission, power brakes, power steering, three-point safety belts and a reinforced cab large enough to easily accommodate three people and MOPP IV gear. The cab structure is designed for the installation of a weapon station on the roof.

Soldier-requested improvements have been incorporated into the A1R models, such as more ergonomic and stronger grab-bars for easier cab entry, increased protection against brush damage to a variety of external components, and reinforced rear light carriers. All these improvements also are available for installation on all previously manufactured FMTVs in the fleet.

Two FMTVs were the first vehicles to successfully complete a 22-year accelerated corrosion and durability test at the Army's Aberdeen Test Center.
