The detection of RIBs has been a matter of concern for a number of years, in particular for monitoring and responding to smuggling activity
In recent times issues associated with Homeland Security has increased interest in this topic. The ATC has developed techniques for the detection and tracking of RIBs at ranges of up to 40km using HF surface wave radar. A series of trials were conducted with HM Customs and Excise using a radar based on the Eastern UK coast, which demonstrated a potent capability.
